Are you or a loved one afraid of the dentist? Does fear keep you from getting the basic dental care you need? Do you want the confidence an attractive smile brings, but are too afraid to get cosmetic dentistry?
Fear no more: sedation dentistry, sometimes called sleep dentistry, can take away your anxiety so you are relaxed during your dental visits and capable of getting all the proper treatments, from routine cleanings to porcelain veneers.

Are You a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry can help nearly everyone who avoids dental appointments because of fear, discomfort, and even busy schedules. It can help people who have:
- Anxiety about dental treatments
- Previous traumatic dental experiences
- A strong gag reflex
- Muscles that get sore from holding the mouth open
- A fear of needles
- A dislike of the sounds or smells of the dentist
- A busy schedule that benefits from getting more done, such as a full mouth rejuvenation, with fewer appointments
In addition to alleviating anxiety, calming the gag reflex, and relaxing the muscles, many people find sedation dentistry reduces discomfort after the procedure. Much of your discomfort comes from your nervousness, and taking that away reduces your discomfort long after the medication wears off.
There are only a few reasons why you might not be a candidate. If you are allergic to the medication or the family of medications used, it may not be recommended. If you have heart conditions or suffer from a serious sleep disorder, sedation dentistry may not be recommended.
How Sedation Dentistry Works
Sedation dentistry is just a couple different pills you take to help you feel relaxed at the time of your appointment. First, you will take a mild sedative the night before so you can sleep well with no worries for the coming day. On the day of your treatment, you will take another sedative that will help you feel relaxed.
Although it is sometimes called “sleep dentistry,” it is actually conscious sedation–you will be awake and generally aware of your surroundings, capable of answering questions and following instructions.
Here are some important details to keep in mind:
- You cannot drive the day of your appointment–arrange for someone to drop you off and pick you up.
- You will need to take the rest of the day off from work
- You will have little memory of your dental appointment
- Use care when moving about on the day of your procedure. The medication may affect your balance.
Sedation dentistry has helped many patients who previously thought they would never be able to get good dental care or cosmetic dentistry.
NuCalm: Drug-Free Relaxation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry works great, but many of our patients have asked for a drug-free sedation alternative, and now advanced neuroscience has given us the answer.
NuCalm is a dental relaxation technique that helps you stay calm during your dental procedure without the use of drugs or gas.
When you come to your appointment we will set up the NuCalm system. It takes less than five minutes to put it on, and it takes less than five minutes to take effect, so it won’t stretch out your dental appointment. NuCalm uses four elements to put you in a relaxed state:
- All-natural supplements
- Microcurrent stimulation patches
- Noise-dampening headphones that deliver relaxing sounds
- Light-blocking glasses that shut out the bright lights we use
These four elements work to scientifically counter the brain’s response to anxiety and fear. This video explains how they work in more detail.
Because there are no drugs involved, there is no residual effect of NuCalm. As soon as your procedure is finished, you can leave the office–and you can drive yourself!
NuCalm works so well and is so convenient that 95% of patients who have tried it say they will use it again and 98% say they would recommend it to friends and family.
